A domain hack is an unconventional domain name that combines domain levels, especially the top-level domain (TLD), to spell out the full “name” or title of the domain.[1] Examples of this hack include del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us/) and goo.gl (http://goo.gl/). (also can be referred to as a domain name hack).

In this context, the hack represents a trick (as in programming), not an exploit or break-in (as in security).

Domains such as .al, .as, .at, .in, .is, .it, .me, .us, or .co (Albania, American Samoa, Austria, India, Iceland, Italy, Montenegro, United States, or Colombia respectively) are easy to use as domain hacks because they correspond to short, simple dictionary words. Alternatively, a name is chosen so that the last few characters match an existing top-level domain, such as “inter.net”, so that every character is used in forming the common name.

Domain hacks offer the ability to produce extremely short domain names. For example, blo.gs has a total of only five letters (versus blogs.com, at eight letters), as every letter is taken into account as the site’s title. Similarly, tweet in, a common Twitter mimic, is represented through the domain http://2et.in.

This makes them potentially valuable as redirectors (like i.am, which redirects to FortuneCity’s V3 service), as pastebins and as base domains from which to delegate subdomains. Also short domains are useful for URL shortening services.

Although an expert domain seller at a large hosting company said, “”I see a lot of people buying them, yes, but I don’t see a lot of usage for them.”. We still think a lot of fun can come from the imaginary twists to everyday words or phrases applied to a domain hack.

Question and answer content has been around on the internet a lot longer than the web. From the early days of usenet (and before that, on prehistoric technologies that came before my time) people have been asking experts for answers. You can’t fail to have noticed, however, that it has resulted in some of the lowest quality content on the web. For far too many questions, the ranking answer is Yahoo! Answers (or similar) that looks as though it was written by someone who found writing YouTube comments too intellectually challenging:

Incidentally, note that there is a Yahoo! Answers API which can be a great source of data for keyword research and content inspiration.

There is a clear need and opportunity for this kind of content. Many users search in question format:

Unfortunately not quite enough to support the venerable Ask Jeeves that encouraged this behaviour.

There are clearly a lot of commercially-oriented queries in there. You only have to look at many of the kinds of questions people ask on Twitter to see this.

You can see the attraction to search engines of indexing Q&A content. While they have made leaps forward in natural language processing, they are still dumb text query engines at heart and having both the question and the answer in plain text on the page clearly supports them in providing efficient answers to many natural language queries.

My favourite example of the right way of doing things is Stackoverflow. If you have ever tried to do anything related to programming, you will have hit annoying issues very early on. At Distilled we have labelled most programming as “copy, paste, swear, fix typo”.

If you’re anything like me, RTFM might as well stand for JFGI these days and you will Just Google It(TM) straight away. As soon as you do this (certainly in recent months), odds are you are going to land on Stackoverflow. The answer you find there is likely to be helpful, authoritative and on you go. But how did it get that way? Stackoverflow is clearly good for search engines, but it got that way by being great for users. If anything, the experience of asking a question and getting it answered is even more impressive than just seeing the repository of brilliant answers that already exist.

Today’s design involves SEO, Java Script, and custom dynamic design attributes that quickly date pages stuck in the static.

Because your website is a powerful marketing tool that creates valuable first impressions, a business web design should be created with more than just appearance in mind. In order to capture the attention of visitors and inspire them to come back and browse again, it is important to hire a designer skilled not only in graphic web design, but in the crucial development process as well. This will ensure that your web page design is not just attractive, but congruent with your mission and goals.

Often designers have an urge to quickly get down to creating the visual feel of your site, but web page design is not just about choosing the colors, pictures and fonts. An effective web page design begins with a designer who will research and study your mission, the target audience, and your competitors. A professional designer will build your web page design around the purpose and content of your site, and can offer custom web design to meet your needs.

Content is the main attraction in the eyes of many internet users, and effective web page design involves planning what information is relevant and how it will be presented. A professional designer will create a sitemap, which will lay out the organization of your content. A sitemap is like a blueprint, and it is crucial to ensure the logical and simple navigation of your site. After a sitemap is created from sound research and planning, the designer will be prepared to build a unique site with simple navigation, interactive applications, and professional graphic web design.

Unique graphics, clean fonts, and the correct use of color schemes is key to an appealing web page design. Hiring a talented designer who is educated in the principles of design including emphasis, proportion, balance, contrast, rhythm and unity, will create the professional feel that is needed to give your business the competitive edge. In addition, an experienced designer whose skills are up to date can create your site with enhancements that can make your page more interactive and interesting. For greater impact, a web page design often incorporates dynamic features.

Using dynamic web design to add moving images to your site can add to the professional feel and functionality of your site, which in turn can influence your credibility in the minds of consumers. It is especially important that you hire a designer skilled in search engine optimization (SEO). This is because if the web design is not done correctly, it is often not SEO friendly. This means that the website is unlikely to be easily found in search engine lists. It is another reason why the best way to go is to hire a professional web design and development company that provides a variety of web solutions in addition to web page design.
